Ken Winell's Space10月5日 Back to BlogosphereOctober 5th
Well, I celebrated yet another birthday this week. I decided to make a resolution to add more blog entries.
Let's see- where to start:
Britney Spears- enough already- The on going antics of a spoiled childstar now being marketed as sex trollop does nothing. Can we get her out of the news, I actually prefer Paris Hilton (and believe me, that is not saying much)
Sharepoint/Project-
I have been doing alot of testing lately of MOSS and Project. I am finding holes in how organizations are utilizing the power of the combined tools. One thing around how projects are managed and resources/risks are managed is relatively straightforward, however with MOSS we now also have the ability to question how and why resourcing decisions are made, and tying workflows directly.
more tomorrow 5月22日 TechEd Countdownwell, its just about three weeks away. I am busy looking at how to make the presentation even more relevant. In talking with a few of my clients, some are suggesting to focus more on the business challenge, but this seems counterintuitive to conveying how the Microsoft products all blend to form a cohesive solution. One client, from the Pharma team, really wanted to talk about how the latest version (Office2007) will address Document Lifecycles, but I think that would make me more of a poster boy for the next version, not working with what is shipping today.
So what is the top mindshare? Workflow, Executive Dashboards and leveraging Business Intelligence.... 4月22日 TechEd PresentationOk- so here is the Agenda
Welcome and Intro (a little about me and what we are going to cover)
Part 1- Collaboration Framework Definition- Going into detail about the core components (the horizontals)
Part 2- Industry Application (How we apply the first part to Industry and Business
Example#1- Manufacturing- New Product Development
Example#2- Pharmaceutical- Global Brand Management
Example#3- Sports- Event management
Part 3- Code and approach
Review of DocTreeView web part
Review of Breadcrumb web part
Part 4- Summary and Q&A
Should take about 45-60 minutes to get thru it all.
Anyone have anything to say?
Come on people....its lonely out here in blogland!
4月20日 Tech Ed 2006 Pt2One more thought on Tech Ed. The session really is geared to deal with the Entire framework of Collaboration, not a specific MS product, although admittedly, the Office System components are the key ingredients. I know some "techies" really want to dive down deep into WSS or SPS, yet, this is more on how the simple elegance of the combination work together rather than focusing on how deep the customization properties are.
HELP ME SHAPE THIS so I discuss what YOU are most interested in hearing about. Industry focus, (specific business abstract components), Interconnectivity or do you really want to just look at good code? TechEd2006Hi, I just wanted to put down a few words about the upcoming session I am presenting at TechEd this year. Its called T9BD6-Collaboration: Putting Industry Solutions to Work in the Mid-Market.
When I first thought of presenting, I was trying to convey how the tools from Office and other MS products can be combined to solve complex business problems, and then replicated across similar businesses. Most persons hear the word collaboration and think we are just talking about Sharepoint, or LCS, but in fact, a complex network of tools can be made to work seamlessly and attack/solve a real business issue.
Example- New Product development- Manufacturing
Here is a great case- A company focusing on package goods has been taking anywhere from 24-36 months to bring a new product or line extension to market. The CEO feels that the time spent in product development could be improved. Enter the solution- By creating a simple taxonomy, we were able to place teams using Sharepoint to focus on Packaging, Consumer Testing, Pricing, Manufacture and Marketing , and while these groups were extremely focused on their individual tasks, we leveraged "Most Popular documents" and a web part for measuring metrics (Recent posts, most active users etc) and in parallel, we also incentivized the team (Money!) to use the tool. We added LCS so that members could IM each other and host LiveMeetings to avoid having to travel between facilities, and cutting down on the planning meetings. Lastly, we really leveraged Office itself, forcing everyone to eliminate the standard email attachment, and using Document workspaces to collaborate on standards and review results etc. Along the way, we discovered that a "template" for new product development could be replicated to different companies- tying in some elementary workflow for approvals, and extensively leveraging notifications and alerts. I planned to show the code for some unique web parts (Document tree views, Bread crumbs etc) that made navigation in Sharepoint easier and a more positive user experience.
Another good example in a different industry was a Service Desk for Pharmaceuticals. Here we see a true Portal, a community of interest and a community of practice, telling users about builds, server status and events from a technology perspective, but also allowing users to track their individual applications and corporate initiatives as an aggregated roll up. Again, easy to replicate.
Now, the meat of the presentation would be to show how small and mid size business can leverage this "enterprise class" architecture without incurring the enterprise expense.
So what do you think????
